A developmental edit is a big-picture look at your story, a collaboration that sees us working together to sculpt the foundations of your manuscript. It evaluates your story arc, structure, character development, pacing, and voice to give you a comprehensive picture of how your book works. A developmental edit seeks to uncover plot holes, issues with the narrative, and inconsistencies in your characters’ behaviour or motivations. It will show you what you can safely cut, and where you need to expand your thoughts. If you know something isn’t quite working but you’re not sure what, a developmental edit will help you root it out. A developmental edit package is best for a writer who’s finished their first draft and wants advice on how to improve, or someone who has been through several rounds of revisions or beta readers but is still struggling to pull their story together.

A developmental edit will include in-line comments on your manuscript, as well as an editorial letter (up to four pages) outlining the issues and offering recommendations for how to address them. After you’ve received the edit letter, we will have a 45-minute conversation (typically on Zoom) where I can answer any questions you may have and help you devise a plan to move forward.

Turnaround: 3-4 weeks

Please note: I only perform developmental edits on fiction manuscripts. My favourite genres to work with are, for both Adult and Young Adult audiences: Fantasy (all sub-genres), Mystery/Thriller, Horror, Sci-Fi, Suspense, and Romance.
